Store Clean & Covered: In order to prevent a build-up of dust, dirt and mold you must properly store, cover and clean your portable generator. Generator covers protect it against damage from water and other such elements.
Purchase Backup Fuel, Oil & Filters: Home generators require an oil change every 50 hours (25 hours the first use) so it is a good idea to keep several bottles of high quality oil on hand at all times. Similarly, you will need backup filters and plenty of fuel to last through the power outage.
Invest in a Long Extension Cord: Since portable and standby generators are very loud, many homeowners position them very far away from their house. However, keep in mind that the further an extension cord stretches the voltage it carries will diminish. We recommend purchasing a 12-gauge extension cord 100 feet long maximum.
Turn it on & Check the Fuel: Hopefully you’re not experiencing power outages that cause you to use your generator every month! As part of your home generator maintenance, we recommend running it every few months to keep the battery charged and to ensure it works when you need it most.
